The Woman’s Industrial Exchange of Baltimore City

The Woman’s Industrial Exchange – one of the first entrepreneurial initiatives launched and controlled by women in Baltimore – is a cherished landmark of this city’s history and social culture. Located in the heart of the historic commercial district of Mt. Vernon and founded in 1880, the mission of The Exchange has been to help women support themselves and their families by selling their handcrafted goods in its consignment shop for over one hundred and twenty years. Today, The Woman’s Industrial Exchange is well positioned to contribute to the great revival in downtown living, working and shopping.

The Exchange is at a critical point in its existence and is seeking a self-starter to serve as the organization’s full-time Executive Director. Must be a dynamic person interested in helping the organization serve more people, grow to its next stage of development, and contribute more substantially to the community. The director will take charge of The Exchange shop, day to day operations of the building, and be a leader in carrying out the mission of the organization overall.

Responsibilities Include:

Shop Management
• Increase sales, primarily by creating and strengthening programs and outreach directed at expanding consignors and bringing customers into The Exchange shop.
• Develop, plan and implement special and seasonal events to both publicize The Exchange and draw foot-traffic into the shop.
• Develop partnerships to provide programs and expand the mission of The Exchange.
• Run the store during regular operating hours.
• Recruit, educate, train and manage volunteers (and eventually paid staff) to work at the shop and special events.
• Optimize presentation and display of merchandise.
• Manage merchandise stock.

Administration and Operations
• Provide leadership in developing organizational and financial plans with the Board of Directors, and carry out policies and procedures authorized by the board.
• Promote active and broad participation by volunteers in all areas of the organization's work. Provide staff support to the Board.
• Maintain official records and documents, and ensure compliance with federal, state and local regulations.
• Manage all financial records of revenues and expenses, and disburse funds as needed.
• Prepare regular Board and funder reports.
• Hire and manage additional staff as funding permits.
• Serve as The Exchange’s liaison to the following:
1. independent auditors
2. property manager
3. retail operators
• To protect The Exchange’s interests and assets, coordinate all operational issues related to building, which is registered with the National Historic Places. Oversee repairs on the property and the equipment of The Exchange, including negotiating contracts.
• Perform additional administrative tasks as necessary to fulfill program responsibilities.

Fundraising
• Maintain current and increase new sponsorships.
• Identify opportunities for additional sources of revenue for The Exchange.
• Present concepts and plans to Board for approval and assistance in implementation.
• Identify and implement opportunities for fundraising and grant proposals.

Enhance marketing and outreach
• Represent the programs and mission of the organization to agencies, organizations, and the general public.
• Increase public awareness and visibility of The Exchange.
• Oversee the preparation and distribution of all materials publicizing the organization.

Qualifications:

Qualifications Preferred
• Minimum 2 years management experience, with familiarity of the nonprofit sector
• Commitment to The Exchange’s program and goals
• Self-directed, energetic, creative, supportive leader, collaborator, and facilitator
• Ability to work with a board in articulating and refining strategies
• Demonstrated experience in fundraising or event planning
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Strong interpersonal skills and ability to represent The Exchange to the public
• Ability to effectively use office technology and function in a self-sufficient office culture
• Commitment to engaging and working with volunteers, consignors and customers from a variety of communities and backgrounds
• Fiscal management, budget preparation, retail or property management a plus
